In India, a food license or certification from the Food Safety and Standard Authority of India (FSSAI) must be obtained by any person or agency proposing to start a food company.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is a legal authority giving all food business operators (FBO) in India a food license. Both FBOs shall obey all the FSSAI laws and regulations for the control of food safety.

An FBO requires an FSSAI license or registration, both depending on the components such as the scale of production, the type of food business operations, and the scope of activity. The FBO will collect 14 digit numbers during the FSSAI Registration process, which must be written on food packets.

The FSSAI Registration guarantees the protection of food items and is effectively a certificate of food safety distributed in India by the Food Authority. Qualified for the FSSAI license are all producers, traders, supermarkets, grocery stores, importers and exporters, etc. FSSAI Licensing guarantees that strict quality inspections are carried out on food products, thus minimizing cases of adulteration and substandard products.
